A man who illegally used an e-bike in Reading while disqualified from driving has been sentenced to prison.

Kyle Giles, aged 21, of Rodway Road, Tilehurst, pleaded guilty to a count each of driving without due care and attention, driving while disqualified and using a motor vehicle on a road without third party insurance, in a hearing at High Wycombe Magistrates’ Court.

Returning to the same court for sentencing yesterday (18/4), Giles was sentenced to 12 weeks’ imprisonment, disqualified from driving for a further 588 days and ordered to pay a surcharge of £154.

Shortly before 8pm on 25 September 2023, Giles was riding an e-bike at speed on Norcot Road when he collided with a car at the junction of Broomfield Road.

Giles sustained a fracture to his ankle as a result of the collision.

The e-bike was not legal for road use and was capable of speeds of at least 45mph and exceeded the power output permitted for electrically assisted pedal cycles.

Giles was also disqualified from driving at the time and did not have any insurance for the vehicle.

Flagrant

Investigating officer PC Emily Aldridge of the Joint Operations Roads Policing Unit, said:

“Kyle Giles chose to ride an e-bike which was not road legal and collided with a vehicle, causing an injury to himself.

“He was also already disqualified from driving, and showed a flagrant disregard to his disqualification and the law.

“I am pleased that the courts recognised this and gave Giles a custodial sentence as a result.

“I hope that Giles uses his time in prison to reflect upon his actions.”
