The M4 is shut in both directions in Wiltshire this morning after a serious incident.

National Highways says the motorway is closed between J15 for Swindon and J14 for Hungerford in the eastbound and westbound direction.

It's after emergency services were called to the scene after 9pm last night (07/01).

Traffic monitoring service Inrix says traffic is "trapped" and being turned around from the rear of the queue.

"M4 in both directions closed, queueing traffic due to accident investigation work between J14 A338 (Hungerford) and J15 A346 Marlborough Road (Swindon East)," it reports.

National Highways says there are diversions in place and drivers are urged to leave extra time for their journeys.

It says: "At approximately 21:46 last night we were advised of a serious incident resulting in the closure of the M4 in both directions between J15 and J14.

"Thames Valley Police are leading a multi agency response to the incident. National Highways resources are providing assistance with traffic management.

"Due to the serious nature of the incident the road is expected to remain closed through the morning to facilitate the ongoing police collision investigations."

Drivers are urged to visit the National Highways website for a list of diversions.
