Man jailed for hit and run in Reading

A man has been jailed for causing serious injury by dangerous driving in Reading.

Jamie Banning, aged 30, of The Maying, Reading, was sentenced to a total of three years’ and nine months’ in prison at Reading Crown Court.

Banning was also sentenced to a six years and 10 months disqualification from driving and ordered to re-take an extended driving test before re-applying for a driving licence.

On 28 March, Banning pleaded guilty to one count each of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, no insurance and fail to stop.

At around 8.49pm on 20 November last year, Banning was driving a white BMW 1 series at high speed along Basingstoke Road.

He then drove the wrong side of a keep left bollard and struck a man riding an electric bike in the opposite direction.

Banning fled the scene immediately, leaving the victim in the road with life threatening injuries.

He was arrested on 11 December, after bring found hiding in the loft of a family member and was charged the following day.

Banning was previously been convicted of assaulting two officers in custody following his arrest for these driving offences.

Dangerous

Phil Hanham, of the Joint Roads Policing Unit, said:

“Firstly, my thoughts are with the victim and his family who are tragically on a very long road to recovery.

“I would like to recognise the witnesses who stopped at the scene and the family of the victim who have been supportive of the police investigation.

“I’d also like to thank all the many officers whose dedication brought this dangerous man to justice.

“We will not tolerate behaviour such as this on our roads, and will robustly pursue and prosecute those who feel it’s acceptable to disregard the law.”
