Thousands of people have been able to receive their coronavirus vaccines thanks a bus driving around East Shropshire.

'Betty the Bus' has been driven around Telford and Wrekin delivering first, second and booster doses of vaccines straight to people's doorfronts.

The region has some of the lowest vaccination rates in the country, but the bus has been helping to administer doses in an effort to raise the numbers.

Many of the people who require the service include those who cannot travel to walk-in clinics to receive their dose.

'Betty' began her journey in Brookside in southeast Telford, and has since go on to provide vaccinations in Donnington, Madeley, Hollinswood and Oakengates.

As a result, over a thousand people in the area have been able to be fully immunised and the rate of vaccination has been raised.

Speaking about the initiative, Council leader and Labour Councillor Shaun Davies said the aim was to reach those who were unable to get their jabs normally.

"We know not everyone can travel to one of the usual walk-in clinics. Betty allows our residents to just pop out down the road to go and get their vaccination," he said.

"Bringing vaccinations to people's doorsteps like this makes it as easy as possible for people to get protected."

Despite the big number of people the bus has helped, the service is not going to disappear anytime soon.

Residents in Horsehay, Donnington, Oakengates, Sutton Hill, Hollinswood, Hadley and Madeley will be able to get their doses as the bus continues its tour around the region over the next week.

The bus will continue to provide vaccinations across Telford and Wrekin until supplies run out each day.

Organisers are also appealing to other people who have not received any Covid jab to get their shot. Anyone who needs to use the service does not need to make an appointment for the bus.

In addition, 'Betty' will be travelling to local employers in the region to promote vaccination and the gradual reopening of the local economy.
