Disruption to rail services to and from Edinburgh Waverley is set to continue this morning, as engineers work to restore signalling systems around the station.

A power surge on Thursday caused them to stop working - forcing the cancellation of trains on the Borders Railway.

Services on the East Coast Main Line were also affected.

Network Rail says its engineers are on site working to identify the fault, restore signalling and get services back on track.

But, with trains unable to move into position overnight and replacement bus services said to be "limited", some travellers were being advised to make alternative plans.

Liam Sumpter, Network Rail Scotland route director, said: “Our engineers are working as fast as they can to fix the fault with the signalling system at Edinburgh Waverley and get train services back on the move.

“The complex nature of our signalling systems means identifying and repairing faults can be a difficult process and we are sorry for the disruption caused to our customers.

“We’d urge passengers travelling on Friday morning to check with National Rail Enquiries or their train operator before they set off for the latest information.”
