An 80-year-old woman has died after her car was involved in a collision with an articulated lorry on the A1.

An investigation's been launched following the incident, which happened near Burnmouth - close to the Scotland-England border - around 9.15am on Saturday.

Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.

Fire crews from Berwick, Duns and Dunbar were among the emergency services to respond. They were joined by an air ambulance from Glasgow.

But the pensioner, who had been driving a grey Vauxhall Viva, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The road was closed for around six hours while the wreckage was cleared. The driver of the white lorry escaped uninjured.

Sergeant Colin Morrison, from Police Scotland, said: “Our thoughts are with the family of the woman who died at this time.

“Our enquiries are continuing to establish the full circumstances and we are asking anyone who was in the area at the time and has information that could assist to get in touch.

“In particular, if you have dash-cam footage that could assist with our investigation then please contact officers.”

It's the latest in a series of smashes on the busy cross-border route.

Earlier this month, three people were injured - two of them critically - following a two-car crash on the English side of the border, north of Berwick-upon-Tweed.

A man and a woman both aged in their 70s were taken to hospital, while a man in his 80s, was treated at the scene for injuries which have been described as "serious but non life-threatening".

It comes as frustrations mount over delays in dualling the A1 its entire length.

Anyone with information is asked to call Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 1124 of Saturday, 16 December, 2023.
