Three people have been rushed to hospital following a collision with a vehicle in Denholm.

Emergency services raced to the scene after the alarm was raised shortly after 3pm this afternoon (Friday).

Police say investigations are ongoing and the A698 road, which runs between Hawick and Bonjedward, remains closed (6.45pm).

Officers have been diverting traffic, with locals reporting the situation led to "gridlock" on some side roads.

The incident unfolded near the east entrance to Denholm, close to the road's junction with The Loaning.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 3.10pm on Friday, December 22nd, 2023 we received a report of a crash involving a vehicle and three female pedestrians.

"All three were taken to Borders General Hospital. Enquiries are ongoing. The road is closed.”

The fire service report that crews from Hawick and Kelso were among those to respond and assisted in moving a vehicle off the road.

The scenes unfolded on what is traditionally one of the busiest days of the year for the emergency services, as revellers hit the pubs and clubs on what is known as Mad Friday - the last Friday before Christmas.
