Eyemouth's new inshore lifeboat has been back in action for the second time in less than a week.

It was called out to help the town's Coastguard rescue a dog that had fallen over the cliffs, at Eyemouth golf course, shortly before 1pm yesterday (Thursday).

In the end, the Coastguard team used ropes to reach the pet and reunite it wth its owners.

But it's prompted a warning to dog owners to keep their pets on a lead while walkiing at the coast.

A spokesperson for the lifeboat team said: "As the dog was half way down the cliff the Coastguard made the decision to rescue it by rope.

"Eyemouth lifeboat crew stayed close by to provide safety cover and communications for HM Coastguard team as they retrieved the dog."

They added: "Please keep dogs on their lead while walking at the coast; dogs don't always recognise the dangers and unfortunately severe injuries and deaths happen each year to dogs who have fallen over cliffs."

Eyemouth's new lifeboat was first called into action on Sunday - less than a week after it arrived. The boat - named "Sheila" - was involved in the rescue of a walker who plunged onto rocks at Killiedraught Bay.

The man, who had injured his leg, was quickly found and transported by the inshore boat to Eyemouth Harbour where he was picked up by an ambulance and taken to hospital for further treatment.

Referring to the latest incident, a spokesperson for the Coastguard added: "A rope rescue technician from Eyemouth was lowered over the cliff and successfully secured the dog using an animal rescue bag. Coastguards then recovered the technician and the dog to the cliff top.

"Our new furry friend suffered no obvious injuries and was taken home by its owners with advice to monitor and take to vet if they had any concerns."
