It's been a busy few days for the lifeboat team in Eyemouth.

After being called out twice during its annual gala day on Saturday, crews helped rescue a lone yachtsman from his sinking boat, about one-and-a-half miles from the town's harbour, yesterday (Tuesday).

RNLI and coastguard teams from both sides of the border rushed to the man's aid after the alarm was raised around 2.15pm.

A spokesperson said: "The man onboard had managed to right the boat and climb back in but was unable to bail out the water and had become very cold.

"The volunteers brought him aboard the all-weather lifeboat 'Helen Hastings' and brought into Eyemouth lifeboat station where the crew gave him casualty care.

"He was then transferred over to Scottish Ambulance Service."

Scotland's charity air ambulance was also put on standby during the rescue but was not needed.

And St Abbs Lifeboat towed the man's boat back to St Abbs harbour.

Meanwhile, it's emerged motorists are continuing to drive to and from the Holy Island outwith safe crossing times.

Berwick Coastguard was called out around 4.35pm yesterday to reports of multiple vehicles attempting to cross as the tide was falling - with one appearing to be stranded.

Safety teams remained on standby until all the vehicles were clear of the water - but a warning's being issued to remind motorists of the dangers.

A spokesperson said: "Although some vehicles were able to cross, smaller vehicles were finding it difficult. The team stood by until the tide had fallen to a level where there was no risk posed to any vehicles.

"We always encourage people not to cross the causeway while there is water on the road - even with the tide falling, a small amount of water can affect the handling of the vehicle.

"If you cannot see the road ahead, there is real risk you will come off the edge of the road surface and find yourself in deeper water with soft ground beneath you."
