Some demolition has already taken place at the Academy, with part of the old technical block being razed to the ground.

But, weeks after enabling works began on the site earmarked for a new secondary in Galashiels, local residents are being asked for their views on the proposals.

A public meeting is taking place at the school at 6.30pm tonight (Thursday, April 20th), while an online survey has also been launched.

Scottish Borders Council agreed last year to build a new secondary on the neighbouring Scott Park.

But the local authority says the consultation is required before final go-ahead can be given.

Demolition work has started at Galashiels Academy.

Work on the two-storey building is expected to start this summer, at a cost of £55 million - with the aim of being completed by 2025, before the existing school site is flattened, and redeveloped.

The new school will include a swimming pool - to replace the town's current pool - a 2G hockey pitch, 3G rugby and football pitch, grass football pitch, covered tennis courts and a 100m running track.

New play park facilities, and improved links with the Gala Policies and Gala Hill woodland, are also planned.

Councillor Leagh Douglas, SBC’s Executive Member for Education & Lifelong Learning, said: “Before the Council proceeds with the process to build a new campus it is important that the voices in the community are heard.

“This consultation is an opportunity to express your views and opinions and we would therefore ask all interested parties to provide their feedback and come along to the public meeting on April 20th.”

Following the consultation, an update will be provided to Councillors on the outcome of the statutory consultation in June.

The new school is being built in front of the current building, on the town's Scott Park.
