Man, 22, ordered to pay victim compensation following bottle attack
A 22-year-old man from Galashiels who smashed a glass bottle over another man’s head after being challenged about his behaviour has been ordered to pay his victim £200 compensation.
John McMillan lashed out in the town’s Overhaugh Street in May last year, after appearing to "make a nuisance of himself".
Selkirk Sheriff Court today (Monday) heard his victim - who was also punched in the attack - suffered cuts to his neck, face, head and hand.
McMillan's solicitor, Ed Hulme, said his client - who had struggled with alcohol and drugs - had been abducted in the weeks leading up the incident and had to jump out a moving car to escape.
Sheriff Peter Paterson said the offence meets the threshold of a jail sentence.
But he noted McMillan's age and personal circumstances and instead placed him under supervision for 18-months and, in addition to the compensation, ordered him to carry out 180 hours of unpaid work.
DTTO assessment
Sentence has been further deferred on a 57-year-old man who admitted robbing a pensioner of her handbag in Peebles.
Colin Boyle pounced on the 75-year-old near his home in the town's Cuddyside in April 2022.
At Selkirk Sheriff Court, Sheriff Peter Paterson warned delaying for a Drug Treatment and Testing Order (DTTO) assessment doesn't mean he won't be getting a custodial sentence.
