Police remain on guard outside a former nightclub in Galashiels for a third day.

It follows the discovery of a cannabis farm with plants believed to be worth around half a million pounds.

Officers swooped on the former Warehouse nightspot in Overhaugh Street on Wednesday morning.

They were still dismantling the set-up when details of the raid were released yesterday.

The town centre building, which is split over three floors, is just yards from a former bookmakers shop, where a cannabis farm with 701 plants - worth between £200,000 and £590,000 - was unearthed in 2019.

An Albanian national found in the building was later that year jailed for 30 months after pleading guilty to being concerned in the supply of a controlled drug.

Not everyone is surprised by the latest discovery, however.

Commenting on the Greatest Hits Radio Facebook page, one said: "Probably explains why Gala Toon Centre has been reekin of weed for weeks."

Another agreed: "That’s why the toon been stinking lol."

Police say enquiries are ongoing.

Chief Inspector Stuart Fletcher, Police Scotland's new Area Commander for the Scottish Borders, said: “We are absolutely committed to disrupting the supply of drugs in our communities and we will use every tool and resource at our disposal to remove these illegal substances from our streets.

“Information from the public remains vital to our efforts. If you have any information or concerns about drugs misuse or wider criminality in your area, please contact us on 101 or contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, where anonymity can be maintained.”
