A 46-year-old man who embezzled more than £14,000 from his work in Galashiels has been given 60 days to repay the money.

Matthew Burrell was employed as a branch manager at Wolseley - formerly known as the Plumb Centre - on Netherdale industrial estate, when he committed the offence, between March the 1st and September the 14th last year.

His solicitor, Ross Dow, blamed a gambling addiction for his client's behaviour but pointed out he is seeking help and hasn't gambled since his arrest.

Selkirk Sheriff Court today (Monday) heard Burrell's partner of 15 years had recently sold a property to support him.

In addition to the compensation order for £14,313.02, Burrell, of Huntlyburn Terrace, Melrose, was also ordered to carry out 150 hours of unpaid work as a direct alternative to custody, to be completed within 12 months.
