A new landmark is set to be reached in the construction of Hawick's £90million flood protection scheme.

All being well, the fourth and final footbridge will be lowered into place over the River Teviot on Monday.

A huge crane - which had to be built in four parts - has been drafted in to install the new link, which connects the Weensland and Mansfield areas of town for the first time.

A special viewing area is being set up to allow the public to watch the spectacle.

A spokesperson for Hawick Flood Protection Scheme said: "We expect this lift will take place in the morning but cannot give an exact time as it will be subject to weather conditions on the day.

"This marks the fourth and final footbridge to be installed by the Scheme. To carry out this lift, a specialist 500 ton crane is required, that is much larger than that required for the previous footbridge lifts.

"The footbridge itself has begun delivery to site. The sections of the footbridge will be assembled into two spans, which will each need to be craned into place.

"A viewing area will be set up if anyone wants to come and see this momentous event! The best locations to view the lift will be from Weensland and Hamilton Road. We ask that you do not go to Mansfield Road to view this event as visibility will be blocked from the working area for the lift."

Meanwhile, a section of Harbour Road in Eyemouth has been closed and flood barriers deployed.

It comes amid concerns over the risk of "wave overtopping".

Eyemouth Coastguard says the barriers are likely to remain in place over the weekend, on the advice of SEPA and Scottish Borders Council, as a precaution.

A spokesperson said: "Harbour Road is closed between Marine Parade and The Ship Inn due to the deployment of flood barriers."
