Two parties currently not represented on Scottish Borders Council are included among six candidates set to contest the Jedburgh and District by-election next month.

The seat became vacant following the resignation of the SNP's Pam Brown in November, on health grounds.

Scottish Eco-Federalists – Sustainable UK will be represented by James Douglas Wilson Clark, while Kaymarie Hughes is standing for the Scottish Labour Party.

They'll be joined on the ballot paper by John Lawrence Bathgate, Scottish Conservative and Unionist; Phil Dixon, Scottish National Party (SNP); Ray Georgeson, Scottish Liberal Democrats; and Charles Strang, Scottish Greens - Think Global Act Local.

The vote's due to be held on February 22nd, with an electronic count to take place from 10am the following morning.

Anyone aged 16 and over in the ward - which includes Ancrum, Jedburgh, Oxnam and Camptown, Roxburgh and St Boswells - is eligible to vote.

But they must be registered by midnight next Tuesday, February 6th.

The Greens currently only have one councillor on the Conservative-led authority, which also includes a number of independent councillors, and LibDems.

One candidate will be elected using the single transferable vote system, which means electors should vote by numbers - ranking candidates in order of preference 1 to 6.

Electors are asked to take their poll card to the polling station when casting their vote although it is not essential.

A spokesperson said: "Make sure you are registered to vote in this by-election, deadline for registration is midnight on Tuesday, February 6th. Visit www.gov.uk/register-to-vote to register online.

"Those registered can apply to vote by post but must do so by 5pm on Wednesday, February 7th, with the closing date for proxy vote applications, enabling someone to vote on your behalf, closing at 5pm on Wednesday, February 14th."
