It's hoped the opening of a new walking route in Northumberland will encourage more visitors to explore the area, and give local businesses a boost.

The latest section of the King Charles III England Coast Path connects Bamburgh with the Scottish border.

The easy-to-follow 38-mile route starts at Marshall Meadows and takes in Berwick and the Holy Island before arriving at Britain's number one seaside town.

Councillor Jeff Watson, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Tourism at Northumberland County Council, said: "This path is great news for residents who walk our superb coastline and will also open up opportunities for new visitors who want to explore the wonderful assets we have in our county.

"Tourism is key to Northumberland's economy and this stunning route should bring in additional visitors all year round who want to experience everything we have to offer.”

The new path boasts spectacular views of Lindisfarne Castle.

The new national trail is being opened in sections around the coast and will be fully walkable by the end of 2024.

Bamburgh Castle is included in the latest section of the King Charles III England Coast Path.

Neil Constable is from Natural England, which is overseeing the project. He said: "This will see a 245-mile route all the way from Bridlington in East Riding (of Yorkshire) through to Scotland.

"It's been about taking the paths that exist and improving them, filling in the gaps, moving things off-road; and also giving people access rights for the first time to beaches, foreshore, dunes and coastal land types.

"Plus, the provision of the path to roll back on an eroding coast - so the investment we're putting in will be there for everyone in the future."
