Up to 80 jobs are being created in Selkirk after an energy company announced plans to open a new customer service hub in the town.

Utility Warehouse has already hired 25 advisors ahead of its official opening next month.

It revealed workers at Ettrick Riverside Business Centre will provide support for its pre-paid meter customers.

The announcement comes two years after People’s Energy - which had pledged to create 100 jobs in the same building in Selkirk - ceased trading.

Andrew Lindsay, Co-CEO of Utility Warehouse, said: “As a proud Scot, it’s great to be investing in Selkirk, creating local jobs and long-term career opportunities in the Scottish Borders.

"Our business is delivering exceptional growth as we help more families than ever before save on their essential household bills.

"Excellent customer service is fundamental to our success and our new Selkirk team will play a key role in ensuring our prepayment customers receive the very best help and advice.”

The firm, which has more than 880,000 customers, provides energy, broadband, mobile and home insurance services.

The Selkirk hub is UW’s second outside London, and follows the opening of a hub in Burnley last year.

As well as creating new jobs, it has also pledged to support local charities to reinforce its commitment to the town - with local employees deciding how the £16,000 is spent.

The move's being welcomed by South of Scotland Enterprise.

Its chair, Professor Russel Griggs said: “We’re delighted to welcome Utility Warehouse to Selkirk and the South of Scotland.

"Our new five-year plan committed us to attracting ambitious investment, and the new UW hub will provide a significant boost to the local economy and provide opportunities for local people.”
