A key shortcut between Midlothian and the Borders has been closed by police.

The B709 "Granites" road is a popular route with mountain bikers heading for the Tweed Valley.

But cars are being prevented from using the section between Dewar and Innerleithen Golf Club.

It comes amid concerns over the safety of a bridge, which locals say was damaged following a crash overnight.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "The B709 is closed between Dewar and Innerleithen due to a damaged bridge at Blackhopebyre.

"Residential access will be maintained, all other traffic should use an alternative route."
