Investigation launched after staff member seriously injured by train at St Philips Marsh
It happened on 26 September 2023, with the member of staff responsible for shunting trains struck by a train
An investigation has been launched after a member of rail staff was struck by a train at St Philips Marsh depot in Bristol last month.
It happened on the 26th of September at around 1.15pm - with the worker suffering serious lower body injuries following the incident.
The Rail Accident Investigation Branch say the member of staff, who was responsible for shunting trains, had just left the main shed at the St Philips Marsh depot before sustaining serious lower body injuries and some minor upper body and head injuries as a result of the accident that afternoon.
The RAIB have now launched an investigation to look into the sequence of events which led to the incident, considering:
- The actions of those involved and the factors that may have influenced them
- The processes in place for train movements inside the depot, including the training and competence of staff involved with this activity
- The way in which the risks associated with train movements were being managed at the depot
- Any underlying management factors.
In a statement, the Rail Accident Investigation Branch say their work into looking into what happened is independent of any investigation by the railway industry or by the industry’s regulator, the Office of Rail and Road - and will publish their findings when they have concluded their findings.
