Figures have revealed the worrying number of children in Cornwall who were living in poverty BEFORE the pandemic.

Data from 2018/2019 shows more than 30,000 youngsters across the Duchy were struggling.

North Cornwall had the highest total, at 5794. That is 35% of those living in the area.

St Austell and Newquay was second, at 5785 children.

The lowest total was in the Truro and Falmouth areas, at 4492 or 28.6% of the child population.

However, there are fears the current number of children living in poverty in Cornwall could be much higher, because of coronavirus.

We have been analysing the figures on Cash for Kids Day - our nationwide fundraising drive to support those families plunged further into poverty in the last year.

The campaign states: "The pandemic continues to devastate families. Young people living in poverty are really struggling, and they need us now more than ever.

"Donate or sign up to be part of Cash for Kids Day and 100% of what you give will go to help the local children that need it most, providing them with essentials like food, heating, toiletries and health and well-being packs so they can have a brighter future".
