Repairs to a Cornish bridge struck by a vehicle are expected to take "some weeks", according to a local councillor.
Trewornan Bridge near Wadebridge was badly damaged over the weekend, closing the B3314.
Inspections were carried out on Monday (16th May) and officials say the structure has been deemed unsafe.
Posting on social media on Monday, Cllr Carol Mould said: "The bridge has been inspected this morning and is deemed unsafe so will be closed until the repairs can be done. It is expected to take some weeks for the work to be completed.
"The Bridge is an Historic Monument so will involve several agencies to agree the repair process alongside the environment agency. The work will take priority and regular updates posted".
Cllr Mould continued: "The official diversion is along the B3314 towards Pendoggett and out through St Teath. The highways team are assessing other routes today and I have asked that the route through Chapel Amble is considered a one way system alternative. The issue with that being there is a weak bridge on the Lower Amble road towards Gut Bridge so will not be suitable for HGVs and larger vehicles.
"I have asked that appropriate signage be put in place, but this signage will only be advisory as the official diversion is the St Teath option.
"Please take care when driving through all diversionary routes as the considerable increase in traffic will cause disruption to the residents of Chapel Amble and St Teath.
"It is clear we will have to live with this situation for some weeks so please allow extra journey time and avoid busy commuting times if possible.
"School transport have been advised their official route is through St Teath and arrangements made accordingly. I will update again when I have more information".
