A new mining themed playground is set to be built in Camborne after being granted planning permission.

Camborne Town Council has led the project to revamp the Camborne Recreation Ground Play Area and is planning to rename it Wheal Kambronn.

Plans to increase the size of the playground and refurbish it were last week granted planning permission by Cornwall Council.

Playground designers have adopted a mining theme for the area including a pit wheel zip slide, minecart play equipment and a 3-metre underground tunnel for children to explore.

The park design also includes swings, trampolines, accessible roundabouts, see-saws and slides.

Speaking when the designs for the play area were first revealed Camborne Mayor David Wilkins said: “We are very pleased we can bring positive news during what is a very challenging time for our community. The existing play area has provided may years of joy and entertainment to local families, but the time has come for refurbishment.

“These enhancements will not only provide fantastic facilities for our residents but also gives even more reason for families from other areas to come and visit our wonderful parish.”

The town council said that the design for the park had been created following consultation with the public.

This had led to the design including seating for supervising adults, equipment which is accessible for all and facilities for both younger and older children including lots of opportunities for climbing and swinging.

Funding for the playground improvements has been provided through Camborne Town Council and Section 106 money secured by Cornwall Council from developers.

The town council said that it wanted to start work this year but said that it may not be possible due to the coronavirus pandemic.
