The Met Office has issued a 'Level 2' cold weather alert for the whole of Cornwall and the south west.

The yellow alert means the probability of freezing conditions across our region is at 60%

Parts of Dartmoor woke up to a dusting of snow on Tuesday, with the chance of some wintry showers and the gritters due to go out across the whole of the Duchy tonight.

However it looks like the north of England and Scotland, where the alert level is at amber, will experience the worst of the cold snap.

There, experts are predicting blizzard conditions, gales and freezing temperatures.

What is a 'Level 2' cold weather alert?

The Met Office website says a 'Level 2' or yellow alert is triggered "as soon as the risk is 60% or above for any of the thresholds to be breached".

The alert page states: "This is an important stage for social and healthcare services who will be working to ensure readiness and swift action to reduce harm from a potential period of cold weather".

The advice section states: "Prolonged periods of cold weather can be dangerous, especially for older people, those with underlying health conditions, and young children.

"If you’re able, ask if your friends, family or neighbours need any support.

"Stock up foods and medicines so you don’t have to go out too much when it's cold or icy.

"When indoors, stay warm, heat homes to at least 18°C, and keep up-to-date with the weather forecast".

More information about how cold weather can affect your health and what to do if you are concerned about yourself or someone you care for can be found on the NHS website.

What is the full forecast for the south west?
