Fire in commercial building in Falmouth causes road closures

Police and fire crews are in attendance

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service were called at 00:08 this morning (Thursday 16 May) for a fire in a commercial building in Falmouth.

On arrival to Ponsharden Boatyard on the A39 Falmouth Road, crews say the building was well alight.

The fire has been confirmed to have taken place at Cockwells' Production Facility at Ponsharden Boatyard.

Cockwells Modern & Classic Boatbuilding Ltd, which is based at Mylor Creek Boatyard, but also operates from two satellite sites at Ponsharden, between Falmouth and Penryn, confirms that a fire broke out at its production facility at the former Vospers site.

The road is closed in both directions from Hillhead roundabout to Parade North this morning.

Falmouth crews made pumps 5 and aerial ladder platforms one.

Additional crews were mobilised from Tolvaddon, Helston, Newquay, Truro Community fire stations to assist, two officers were mobilised and also specialist vehicles from Perranporth and St Just community fire stations were mobilised.

Crews have now downscaled to 3 pumping appliances, but are still monitoring hotspots.

Roads in the area of Ponsharden will be closed until further notice.

Devon & Cornwall Police are also in attendance.

Managing Director of Cockwells, said: "We are immensely grateful to the fire crews who attended and the swift action of all the emergency services.

"We will now work with the relevant authorities to determine the cause of the fire and will issue further communications when more is known."
