A string of flood alerts are in force for Cornwall as high spring tides, big waves and westerly winds hit the coast.

The Environment Agency says this may cause spray and wave overtopping, and minor flooding of quayside and low-lying land in certain locations.

Four alerts have been issued along the south coast from Land's End to Lizard Point, Lizard Point to Gribbin Head, Gribbin Head to Rame Head and Rame Head to Plymouth including the tidal estuaries all being at risk.

Some areas could be affected through until Friday, including Penryn, Flushing, St Mawes and Mevagissey.

It comes as a yellow weather warning for wind comes into force for Cornwall on Wednesday.

Cornwall to be battered by strong winds and big waves in 15-hour weather warning

The Met Office says the Duchy will be battered by gales of up to 60mph along with big waves.

"Flooding is possible over all high tides from today, Monday 14th December to Friday morning, 18th December.

"Force 7 to 8 south westerly winds and offshore wave heights up to 6m are forecast to coincide with high spring tides.

"This may cause spray and wave overtopping, and minor flooding of quayside and low-lying land in certain locations including Penryn, Flushing, St Mawes and Mevagissey.

"High tide times at Falmouth are: Monday 16:57, Tuesday 05:18 & 17:45, Wednesday 06:05 & 18:32, Thursday 06:51 & 19:18 and Friday 07:36. Times will vary along the coast and flooding is possible 2 hours either side of high tide.

"Peak tide levels could be up to 600mm higher than published and flood warnings may be issued during this period. Tides peak on Wednesday morning.

"People are advised to stay away from risk areas and take care next to the coast. We will continue to monitor the situation."
