Firefighters from across Cornwall and Devon have spent the night dealing with a so-called 'hazmat' incident in Saltash.

A 'hazmat' situation is the name given to an incident involving hazardous materials.

Crews from the town, Bodmin, St Austell, Launceston and Camels Head in Plymouth rushed to the scene in the Pill Lane area.

They later requested a water carrier, which was dispatched from Liskeard.

The resources called in included an Incident Command Unit and an Environmental Support Team.

Saltash Community Fire Station said it involved the accidental mixing of chemicals in the pool area of a leisure facility, since been confirmed to be China Fleet Country Club.

Cornwall Fire & Rescue Service said: "Crews were mobilised at 21:25 to a HazMat incident in Saltash.

"Crews from Saltash, Camels Head, Bodmin, St Austell and Launceston are in attendance.

"In total, there are 4 Appliances, 1 Environmental Support Vehicle, 1 Incident Command Unit, and 2 Officers in attendance".

Just after 11.15pm the CFRS added: "The incident commander has requested a water carrier to attend the scene. This has been mobilised from Liskeard Community Fire Station".

Saltash Community Fire Station said personnel vented off the tank and made the area safe.

China Fleet's Managing Director, Dean Bennett, said: "Last night a small amount of pool chemicals were inadvertently mixed together in our pool plant room; in rare circumstances this can create chlorine gas.

"Due to the small quantities mixed we did not experience any issues however as a precaution the fire service were called and they carried out their normal protocols for dealing with any chemical issue.

"The pool was closed for a short period last night and the facility has now re-opened as normal".
