Monuments in Cornwall have been illuminated in the colours of the Ukrainian flag as officials show solidarity following the Russian invasion.

The country is into its sixth day of attacks from Russian forces.

Saltash Town Council says it is standing in solidarity with the people of Ukraine.

It has illuminated the Cornish Cross yellow and the Brunel Bust in blue - and Ukrainian flags are being flown outside the council buildings.

The Mayor of Saltash, Councillor Pete Samuels, said: “I, along with my fellow Saltash Town Councillors are horrified by recent events in Ukraine.

"The attacks on innocent people is beyond comprehension and as a Town Council we condemn this.

"We stand by all those in Ukraine and our thoughts are with those who are worried about loved ones back home and we stand ready to support in any way we can.

"We will be showing our support by lighting of the Cornish Cross yellow and Brunel bust blue and we will be flying the Ukrainian flag on Town Council buildings.”
