Cornwall's NHS is preparing for a busy bank holiday and half-term.

They're urging people to help get loved one homes from hospital as soon as they're well enough to free up beds for the sickest patients.

The warm weather is expected to bring more visitors, so we're being asked to choose the right service at the right time.

NHS Cornwall and Isles Of Scilly say they've already handed out 140 'fast-access one-off' discharge grants of up to £1,500 - which are still available to benefit from.

Those who think can support someone outside of the ward is urged to speak to a nurse in charge.

There are a number of things we can do at home and whilst on holiday to keep safe and to help protect the NHS:

'Choose Well' at home

  • Self-care: Make sure your medicine cabinet or first aid kit is stocked with first aid treatments including; paracetamol and aspirin, plus the equivalent for children if you have them; mild laxatives to relieve constipation; re-hydration mixtures for diarrhoea or vomiting; indigestion remedies; antiseptic cream
  • Pharmacy: Visit your local pharmacy for rashes, upset stomachs, aches and pains and emergency contraception. Pharmacists can also provide an emergency supply of repeat medicines if you run out
  • NHS 111: Use the website or call 11 for 24/7 advice and support
  • GP: Call your own GP even whilst on holiday if you experience persistent symptoms
  • Minor injuries: Head to your local minor injuries unit for non life-threatening issues, such as sprains, fractures and burns
  • Mental health: You can call Cornwall's mental health helpline on 0800 038 5300 if you're worried about your own or someone else's mental health
  • 999: Call 999 in life-threatening emergencies. This includes trouble breathing, chest pain, severe bleeding, stroke, and loss of consciousness

'Choose Well' on holiday

If you have forgotten to pack your prescription medication, pharmacists can arrange an emergency supply, even if you do not live in Cornwall, which you can do online.

If you are visiting Cornwall and need non-urgent advice, call your own GP.

If you need non-urgent care when your own GP is not open, visit NHS 111 online or call 111.

If you need to visit a hospital do not just turn up - you are urged to call NHS 111 first to find out where you should go and when.

You can find out more about how to look after yourself on the NHS 'Help Us Help You' website.
