A horse had been rescued from a river in Cornwall after it was spooked by fireworks.

Firefighters spent four hours getting the animal to safety on Wednesday night.

It happened in at Tywardreath Highway on the towpath upstream of the level crossing.

"Last night we rescued a horse who had been spooked by fireworks and ended up in a river.

"Crews worked hard for 4 hours and were successful in their task."

The fire service is urging people to consider the impact on animals before setting off fireworks.

"A sad example of how fireworks can cause harm and distress to animals.

"Please consider this if you set any off."
