A large police operation is taking place in Newquay to tackle a number of burglaries and driving offences.

Photos on social media show several police officers and patrol cars in the Tregunnel Hill car park and the operation is believed to be linked to a group who have set up camp in the area.

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: "Officers are currently at Tregunnel Hill, Newquay as part of a dynamic policing operation.

"A large policing presence is currently in the area in connection to numerous burglaries and driving offences linked to a group currently residing in the Tregunnel Hill area.

"Initial arrests have been made and full details will be made available following the completion of this policing operation".

In a post, Newquay & St Columb Community Network said: "Tregunnel car park in Newquay remains open as the Council works to resolve an issue with an unauthorised encampment in the car park.

"The council is required to follow lawful process and, as part of that process, has served a Direction to Leave notice, which requires the unauthorised encampment to vacate the site.

"Should any persons fail to comply with such a direction, the council will to the court for an order to enforce it.

"We are grateful for the co-operation and understanding of residents and visitors while we work to resolve the situation as quickly as possible".

Devon & Cornwall Police have said the operation is on-going.
