Police are investigating an unexplained death after a suspected assault in Launceston.

A 48-year-old man died on Friday (1st October) in hospital where he was being treated for head injuries sustained a week earlier.

It is believed he was assaulted in the street in Launceston – somewhere between the New Market Inn pub and Nicolls Tenements – on the evening of Friday 24th September.

Officers want anyone who saw what happened, or who has any information, to get in touch.

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: "The incident happened between 7pm and 8.15pm and officers are appealing for witnesses or anyone with CCTV of the area to come forward.

"The white male victim may have been walking with the aid of a crutch or walking stick at the time.

"The man’s death is currently being treated as unexplained and enquiries are ongoing.

"A 55-year-old local man has been arrested on suspicion of assault and remains in police custody at this time."
