Stand-off involving armed police in Liskeard ends in arrest

Officers say a suspect who hid up a tree was brought down using a cherry picker

A man has been arrested following a four hour stand-off with police in Liskeard.

Armed officers were called to Castle Street on Wednesday evening, to reports of an assault and a person with a knife.

Negotiators were also scrambled after a suspect scaled a tree in a churchyard.

Devon & Cornwall Police have confirmed they were later brought down by cherry picker.

A man in his 40s from Bodmin was taken into custody on suspicion of assault.

A force spokesperson said: "Police were called at 5.55pm yesterday, 31st August, following reports of an altercation at an address in Liskeard.

"A man and a woman were reportedly assaulted by another man who was in possession of a small knife. The male victim sustained a minor injury.

"The suspect fled the property in Castle Street.

"Firearms and local officers attended, alongside a dog unit, and conducted an area search.

"A man was located within a tree at a local churchyard around 6.50pm.

"The fire service attended.

"Police officers conducted a lengthy negotiation with the man.

"He was brought down safely around 10.40pm with the use of a cherry picker.

"A man in his 40s from Bodmin was arrested on suspicion of assault ABH and common assault. He remains in custody".
