Tributes have been flooding in following the death of one of the country's best-loved actresses, Dame Barbara Windsor.

The Carry On and EastEnders star has died at the age of 83 following a long battle with Alzheimer's.

The Theatre Royal Plymouth have described her as a "formidable woman with a special place in British hearts for more than half a century".

They posted the message online alongside a photo of the actress outside of the venue in 1991 - when she was performing in the musical Guys and Dolls.

EastEnders stars have also been paying tribute to their former colleague.

Her on-screen son Steve McFadden says he's "going to miss her terribly", while Letitia Dean, who plays Sharon Mitchell, described it as "utterly heart-breaking news".

Dame Barbara Windsor died at 8.35pm on Thursday (10 December) at a London care home, her husband Scott Mitchell said.

He said the cherished actress' final weeks were "typical of how she lived her life'' and were "full of humour, drama and a fighting spirit until the end''.
