A man in Coventry was arrested, and two firearms and a machete were recovered, after a car was spotted acting suspiciously in the city last night (23 Dec).

West Midlands Police officers were in a short pursuit after they attempted to stop a car that was believed to be on cloned plates at around 9.40pm.

The car was found abandoned on Austin Drive, Coventry a short time later.

With the help of a police dog, officers searched the area and two firearms and a machete were recovered nearby.

A 21-year-old man was arrested and will be questioned on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle, dangerous driving, burglary, possession of an offensive weapon and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.

Enquiries are ongoing to trace the other occupants of the vehicle and officers are in the area trawling CCTV and making enquiries.

No charges have been made as of yet.

The arrest falls under Operation Target, which is the force’s commitment to tackling serious and organised crime in the region.

West Midlands Police is appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident, has doorbell or dashcam footage, or was in the area to come forward.
