A drug dealer has been jailed after a man died during a collision in Coventry in 2021.

In the early hours of the 1st November, Matthew Morrall was driving his BMW 1 series in excess of 70mph along Jardine Crescent when he lost control of his car and hit a pole.

The passenger side the of the car sustained the impact and as a result the passenger suffered serious injuries. Both men were taken to hospital where sadly a man in his 20s was pronounced dead.

Morrall admitted to smoking cannabis and drinking Vodka. After a search of his vehicle police found a large bag of cannabis, cash and a mobile phone. Analysis of phone records revealed that Morrall had been drug dealing on the night of the collision.

Traffic collision investigators analysed CCTV in the area, the scene and the car and were able to determine how fast Morrall was going right before the crash.

The 24-year-old, of Warren Green, Coventry pleaded guilty to death by dangerous driving and possession with intent to supply class B drugs at Warwick Crown Court. On Friday (26 May) he was sentenced to six years in prison and disqualified from driving for 9 years and five months.

He will also be required to complete an extended driving test before being allowed back behind the wheel.

Detective Sergeant Paul Hughes, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Morrall admitted to drinking vodka and taking cannabis that night, yet he still chose to get behind the wheel and drive at lethal speeds in a 30mph zone.

“His dangerous driving has resulted in a lot of suffering for the family and friends of the man who lost his life and sadly no prison sentence will ever bring him back.”
