A new campaign is launching in Coventry today to help give children the equipment to help them learn during lockdown and beyond.

'Coventry Learning Packs' is looking to support families by providing pens and folder - as well as digital resources.

They're aiming to work with schools in the city to provide all of the basics needed to learn.

They're hoping to raise £10,000.

Chris Denson, Joint Secretary of Coventry NEU commented:

“We know that poverty levels have been exacerbated during the Covid crisis. The UK already had 4.2m children in poverty, equating to 9 children in every class. Two million are in severe food insecurity.

"We want to help the children of Coventry through this pandemic and to support their learning, but this is a sticking plaster over something the Government should have dealt with.

"No child should be at home unable to engage through lack of resources, whether laptops or basic stationery."

Coventry MPs Taiwo Owatemi and Zarah Sultana are backing the campaign.

Taiwo Owatemi MP commented:

“This is a great initiative. Well done to the NEU and teaching staff. I hope this will go some way in supporting young people's learning across Coventry at this difficult time.”

Through donations of the local NEU District and from the public fundraising page they've already raised over £5,000

A public launch meeting is being held tonight (Tuesday).
