Carlisle United have been relegated to League Two following today's defeat to Northampton.

The Blues never managed to pick up any real form throughout the season and despite a 3-1 win away to Peterborough last week, the loss in League One this afternoon has condemned the club to relegation.

Going into the season many fans were optimistic about the club's chances of staying up, despite claiming an unlikely promotion through the play-offs from League Two last year.

Just two seasons ago though the club were in a battle to stay in the football league pyramid at all, facing relegation from the fourth tier of English football.

Manager Paul Simpson rejoined the Blues as the head coach in February of 2022 with Carlisle struggling sitting second bottom of League Two.

With 15 games remaining though, Simpson managed to save the side from dropping out of the EFL and in the process earned himself a three-year contract.

A year on from his contract signing, he had the Brunton Park side promoted against all odds.

This season though they've only managed to win six games and draw nine in the past 40 but despite this the club's attendance is at a four-decade high.

But Castle Sport's Group, owned by the Piatak Family, took over the club in November and as a result the club's now debt free and goes into League Two next season with what's believed to be one of the highest budgets in the league.
