Seventeen arrests have been made and enquiries are continuing after the Middlesbrough v Derby County game in the Championship.

Cleveland Police say a minority were intent on spoiling the day for everyone and pockets of disorder took place at the ground and across the town centre prior to, during and after the match.

Officers arrested 17 people on suspicion of various offences including public order offences, being drunk and disorderly, possessing a firework/flare at a sporting event, affray, being found in possession of drugs, failing to comply with a dispersal order and for assaulting emergency workers.

But the Match Commander has praised the vast majority of genuine supporters

Cleveland Police worked closely with both clubs as well as British Transport Police and Northumbria and Derbyshire Police Forces to prepare for the game.

Match commander Dave Sutherland said: "We will now be reviewing video footage obtained during the day with the aim of identifying and taking action against anyone else suspected of being involved in disorder and criminality."

Three officers also provided CPR to a gentleman who suffered a medical episode. We understand he remains in hospital receiving treatment and we wish him a speedy recovery.

Former Derby County owner, Mel Morris

Saturday's match came a day after former Derby County owner Mel Morris and Middlesbrough chairman Steve Gibson reached an agreement over a legal dispute between the two Championship sides.

Derby are facing the prospect of going out of business due to their financial problems.

But their administrator Carl Jackson says the settlement will allow them to "push forward" with plans to sell the club.
