Beavers rewilded in Willington

Beavers are being reintroduced in Derbyshire after 800 years as they re-enter the wild wetlands of Willington.

Derbyshire Wildlife Trust have said the rewilding project at the Willington Wetlands will create a natural habitat for the beavers to live happily, and offer a space for the public to enjoy. They have previously stated:

'Beavers are great at helping to maintain land not only for themselves, but for other wildlife as well.'

'We are creating a 5 mile circular walk on site, as well as build a brand new visitor centre and hide so everyone can get up close with nature and hopefully spot a beaver or two!'

Beavers were exterminated from living in wild habitats, and it has been a dream of Derbyshire Wildlife Trust to help boost more species by getting them back into their natural habitat.

Following three years of planning, the day they released them on the 28th September will have marked a key moment in time for the Trust which has worked hard to create a safe space for the rodents.

The pair are already settled into their new home after travelling over from Scotland, and both beavers were more than happy to head straight into the water upon arrival.
