A major incident by Derbyshire County Council has been declared with the impact of the snow across the High Peak and upper Derbyshire Dales.

Advice from all agencies involved is not to travel in these areas.

A yellow weather warning for snow and ice is in place for Derbyshire until 10am Saturday.

The Met Office say snow will be accompanied by strong winds creating blizzard conditions in places.

Derbyshire County Council said: "Snow and high winds overnight causing very difficult conditions in the High Peak and Derbyshire Dales. We also have some trees that have fallen down due to the weight of snow blocking some roads.

"The advice is do not travel. Stuck vehicles are causing issues."

Derbyshire County Council have also closed their adult community education centres at Alfreton, Ashbourne, Bolsover, Swadlincote,Fairfields Buxton, Derbyshire Eco Centre and Glossop due to the weather.

Derbyshire Police have issued a statement: "Drivers are urged not to travel unless absolutely necessary on Peak District routes this morning due to significant snowfall overnight and adverse weather conditions.

"Most roads in the High Peak and Derbyshire Dales are impassable.

"We have reports of vehicles which have become stranded on roads and are continuing to work with Derbyshire Emergency Planning, Mountain Rescue Teams and Peak 4x4 Response to help motorists.

"Do not ignore road closed signs- they are there for your safety. Even if the road looks clear where you are, the conditions could be much worse further along.

"Roads in other parts of Derbyshire may also be treacherous due to the snow and ice, so please check before you set off.

"While gritting teams have been working hard overnight, the snow has continued to fall and temperatures have dropped.

If you have to travel, allow extra time, make sure you have additional items that you might need for the journey and drive to the conditions."
