Investigation into fatal Chesterfield blaze 'ongoing'

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue have issued an update into the incident

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service have confirmed today (9 April) that investigations into a fatal house fire in Chesterfield continue.

The work is being carried out jointly with the police into the cause of the fatal fire which killed two people at a three-storey terraced house on Staunton Close over the weekend.

In a statement, the service said: "A joint police and fire investigation remains ongoing into the cause of a fatal fire at a three-storey terraced property on Staunton Close, Chesterfield.

"Emergency Services were alerted to the fire at 02.44 hours on Sunday 7 April following a 999 call from a neighbour who could hear a smoke alarm sounding.

"Tragically, a 65-year-old female, and a 31-year-old male have both been declared deceased at the scene. One further occupant was out of the property on arrival of fire crews.

"The joint investigation into the cause of the fire remains ongoing today (Tuesday 9 April 2024) after delays due to the structural integrity of the property and the safety of those entering the property for investigation."
