Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service is launching an online tool to help residents protect their houses from fire. The safety check will guide users around their home and help them to spot fire risks in each room.

The 15-minute questionnaire will give advice about how to reduce the risk of house fires. The tool produces a personalised action plan to help everybody in the home stay safe.

Preventing the main causes of fires

The new tool will highlight some of the top hazards people tend to have around the house, according to Prevention Group Manager Lee Williams.

"One of the main areas is to make sure people have working smoke alarms. If they don't, that will be flagged through the tool.

"The main causes of accidental dwelling fires are cooking and smoking, so the safety check tool will give advice on making sure cigarettes are discarded correctly and making sure you're keeping an eye on your cooking."

In 2021/22 Derbyshire firefighters attended 377 accidental house fires across the county, and four people lost their lives.

The Home Fire Safety tool is designed for people who do not qualify for the fire service's free Safe and Well visit system.
