Storm Pia causes disruption across the East Midlands

Do not travel advice has been issued in parts of the UK - over concerns Storm Pia could cause significant disruption on Thursday 21st December.

The East Midlands were hit by strong winds, with East Midlands Trains cutting many rail services.

The Met Office have issued a yellow weather warning until 3pm

Fallen trees in Derbyshire

Derbyshire Council said it was dealing with reports of around 70 fallen trees with teams out and about working through the list.

In Ashbourne, a falling tree hit a car on the A515, causing a driver to suffer minor injuries.

In Mickleover, Station Road was also closed after a large tree crushed a car.

Nobody was injured but the road was closed between East Avenue and Ladybank Road.

Disrupted train services

East Midlands Trains said the weather was causing severe delays on some services, with multiple routes suspended.

Lines affected include:

Sheffield - Stockport

Nottingham - Matlock

Nottingham - Worksop

Leicester - Lincoln - Nottingham - Newark

Derby - Crewe

More road closures

One lane was closed on the M1 Northbound in Leicestershire this morning at Junction 22 for the A50.

It is because of debris on Markfield road, causing closures both ways on the A50.

In Nottinghamshire, a fallen tree blocked the A6002 near Bilborough College and debris has forced closures on the A60 Mansfield Road near Redhill.

Bus provider Trent Barton reported all stops in Little Eaton will not be running and there are diversions in Sandiacre.

No trips to see Santa

Matlock Farm Park closed today after several trees, shelters and fences fell down during high winds.

The team said they are rescheduling Santa experiences, trying to fit in people in the run up to Christmas.

All animals are safe and unharmed.

Elvaston Castle is also closed today due to the risk of falling trees.

More sites closed

Wollaton Hall's popular Christmas event was not running today as the site stayed shut all day. A notice on its website read: "Due to exceptionally high winds & fallen branches in key areas, Wollaton Hall and Deer Park remains closed today and this evening, Thursday 21st December. We apologise for any inconvenience caused, and will keep you updated on our website to confirm if the park is reopened tomorrow."

Also in Nottinghamshire, White Post Farm in Newark was closed.

In Derbyshire, sites staying shut included Shipley Country Park, Elvaston Castle and Matlock Farm Park

Power cuts

Several homes in Leicestershire suffered power cuts, with more than 150 properties in Newtown Linford without power according to the National Grid website.

Other areas affected include Donington le Heath, Woodhouse Eaves and Launde.

Fallen cladding

In Loughborough, a road and footpath closure is in place on Sparrow Hill after cladding came off of a building. Police have not confirmed that it was caused by the weather, but are urging people to avoid the area and find an alternative route.
