Two hours of tailbacks on the M5 in Somerset after a serious collision

The southbound stretch between Bridgewater and Taunton was shut after a person died

Drivers are experiencing lenghty delays on the M5 in Somerset.

It follows a serious collision southbound between junctions 24 at Bridgewater and 25 at Taunton.

A person's died following the crash at around 4am this morning.

Lane 1 southbound remains shut for the recovery of vehicles and repairs - a diversion's in place on the A38.

A vehicle left the road between junctions 24 for Bridgwater South and 25 for Taunton.

Paramedics and highways officers were also called to the incident.

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said:

"We were called just after 4am on Saturday 26 June to a single-vehicle collision on the M5 southbound between junctions 24 for Bridgwater and 25 for Taunton.

"Sadly the passenger of the black Audi died at the scene.

"The driver was arrested and taken to hospital with injuries not believed life-threatening or life-changing.
