A developer says it's "full steam ahead" for plans to build a £200m 24-storey development in Bournemouth town centre.

Central government has decided not to call-in an application for the apartment and hotel complex in Glen Fern Road.

Poole-based Fortitudo said the development would include almost 500 flats, a 104-bed hotel, commercial units, a cinema, nightclub, restaurants and a sky bar.

Fortitudo boss Richard Carr said there has been high interest from companies interested in taking spaces in what has been dubbed Boho Grand.

Historic England had objected to the plans and asked Secretary of State Michael Gove to intervene.

A Historic England spokesperson said: "We are disappointed that the Secretary of State has decided not to call-in the proposals.

"We recognise the potential of this site to make a positive contribution to Bournemouth’s regeneration, but remain concerned about the adverse impact of a 24-storey tower on the town’s distinctive townscape.

"We will work with the new administration at Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council to encourage recognition and celebration of Bournemouth’s precious heritage in planning decisions."

The site is currently occupied by a multi-storey car park

Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole planning committee chairman David Kelsey called on councillors to agree the scheme and help the town centre to prosper.

"It is large but, hey ho, deal with it, We will get used to it,” he said, “We have to get away from the past – things are changing."

He said the scheme would offer regeneration for the area and offer a chance for many people to live in small flats in the town centre, which were likely to be affordable for younger people.

Planning officers had suggested refusing the application claiming it would cause 'harm' to the setting of surrounding buildings.
