Dorchester Skatepark has now been closed during lockdown.

The town council which runs the site in Weymouth Avenue says it was waiting for guidance from the government.

Deputy town clerk Steve Newman said the closures would come into immediate effect after receiving guidance from the national Skate England governing body which has been in consultation with Government officials to clarify the rules.

Other skateparks, whether indoor, or outdoor, will also be expected to close.

Dorset Police say concerns had been raised by the public over the large number of young people seen using the facility at the weekend and not social distancing, and the force had been planning to take action.

A Dorset Police spokesman said:

" We are aware of concerns raised about this skate park, as well as others across Dorset, and officers from the local neighborhood policing team will be carrying out proactive patrols in the area to engage with those using the park."

Also closing will be multi use games areas run by the council in parks across the town because they feature basketball facilities.

Deputy town clerk Steve Newman told a town council meeting on Monday evening that all other play areas operated by the council could remain open, along with parks, other open spaces and public toilets.

The refreshment kiosk in the Borough Gardens is also allowed to remain in operation.
