Help for people in Dorset feeling lonely and isolated this Christmas
Dorset Council says going digital could help keep you connected
Coronavirus is revealing some of Dorset's longstanding problems according to a charity dedicated to helping people through the pandemic.
Help and Kindness in Dorchester**** says many people go lonely at Christmas, but COVID-19 is exacerbating the issue.
It's amid a race to get an estimated 150,000 of those without access to the internet, facing loneliness and isolation this Christmas connected to loved ones online.
John Sloper from the charity said:
"It's a bit like the tide going out. One of the things it's shown, a lot of underlying problems that we face as a county, including social exclusion and the difference for people who can and can't get online.
"The council and many of the other organisations across the county have been working really hard this year to try and help people make the best use of digital but also looking at that provision for those people who can't get online for whatever reason."
Problems with getting online
Cost, skill and availability are among some of the top reasons some people can't get online, but Dorset Council is urging anyone stuck to get in touch.
They're also asking us to make sure our friends and loved ones are prepared for what it's calling the first 'digital Christmas'.
In the run up to Christmas Dorset Council are promoting how digital can help festivities go with a swing, as well as highlighting the help available to get people online.
Councillor Laura Miller said:
"It's definitely going to be a strange Christmas for all of us but particularly people that are on their own.
"The message is really that you don't have to be alone, even if you're going to be physically alone in your home, you don't have to be alone.
"People can chat to you or go online and there is lots out there and people are waiting and willing to help so get in touch with the council. We don't want anyone to feel lonely this Christmas."
Free Digital Hotline
Dorset Council runs a free Digital Hotline to help people with any digital enquiry or problem and boost their IT skills.
Manned by Digital Champions, the hotline volunteers can answer a whole range of questions - from how to search for the perfect Turkey recipe to buying Christmas gifts online; and from how to attend virtual carol services to arranging Zoom party games with the family.
Cllr Peter Wharf said:
“Christmas is a wonderful time, but it can also be one of the most challenging times of the year for many people – and no more so than this year.
“The internet has opened up a world where you can find support and advice in an instant.
“If you know a neighbour, a friend or relative that is still unsure about doing anything online do tell them about our Digital Hotline, it’s never too late to learn these valuable skills.”
