Weymouth Esplanade cordoned off after man climbs onto roof

Part of Weymouth Esplanade was cordoned off last night after a man climbed onto the roof of a building.

Police are fire crews were called to the scene at 4.48pm.

The man had climbed up scaffolding and then onto the roof of a nearby building.

Man winched to safety

The incident lasted around 5 hours before the 32-year-old man from Dorchester was taken down to safety.

A spokesman for Dorset Police said:

"Officers attended to engage with the man and road closures were put in place as a precaution. The man was brought to safety at around 10.35pm.

"A 32-year-old man from Dorchester was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and using threatening, abusive words or behaviour likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress and is assisting officers with their enquiries.

"We would like to thank members of the public for their patience and understanding while officers dealt with this incident."
