A man's been rescued from a flat fire in Dorset.

Crews were called to the property in Sturminster Newton at 12.34am this morning after smoke was seen coming from a window.

More than 7 fire engines were needed to put the fire out.

Its thought it was started accidentally by a cigarette.

A spokesman for Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue said:

"The fire was contained to the one flat, with the male occupant led to safety by firefighters; he was taken to hospital by ambulance as a precaution.

"No other flat was affected and there was no need to evacuate other residents.

"The stop came at 2.17am, confirming that six breathing apparatus wearers had used two hose reel jets and a main jet to extinguish the fire; a ventilation fan was also used to clear the smoke."
