Dorset's much loved dolphin could be getting a memorial to immortalise him, and remind others to keep others like him safe.

Danny the Dolphin died last month after he was struck by a ship.

His body was found in the water at Portland Port.

Over £200 has been raised for a small project to remember the cetacean, who was frequently spotted around Weymouth and Portland.

It will also serve as a reminder to seafarers on how to act responsibly around other dolphins.

Bee Woodland works at Portland Marina and is behind the project. She said:

"Danny reached the hearts of many people. He was magical to watch and came into the marina a lot. The berth holders always enjoyed seeing him playing around the boats.

"Whilst there are a lot of solitary cetaceans out there, I think Danny reached into the community at Portland and Weymouth.

"I just thought it would be nice to commemorate the time he spent with us."

Cetaceans like Danny, who choose to swim solo, are at risk of losing their wariness of humans and boats meaning they swim closer and closer, leading to them eventually getting hurt.

Bee says she wants to use the project to educate people about the risk:

"What we would really like to do is turn it into an educational piece to inform others of how to keep other dolphins that might stray into our waters safe.

"Being around boats, they lose their wariness of propellers and other things. It's just basically teaching people about how to interact with them, or not to, and just keeping them safe while they're out on their boats."

Bee is calling for donations to the project through the charity Marine Connection.

So far £200 has been raised but she says she'd like to raise more to make the memorial something extra special. She's looking to make it out of Portland Stone as a fitting nod, but that won't come cheap.
